The first to raise your hand.
The woman who “just gets things done.”

From the outside, you look empowered. But on the inside? You’re running on empty.

You’ve tried HIGH Fitness… Pi-yo classes… meditation apps… and coffee with girlfriends. And they offer relief. But it’s fleeting. Before long you find that your patterns of decision making and doing it all have returned. The overwhelm you experience is present more than it’s not. Something has to change.

If you’re an ambitious woman in St. George, UT, juggling family, career, faith (or not), and everything in between — this post is for you. Sometimes what we call empowerment is actually emotional exhaustion in disguise. And if you’ve been people-pleasing for years, it can be hard to tell the difference.

Let’s get honest about what’s fueling your success… and what it might be costing you.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://guidedwellnesscounselingut.com/contact/” button_text=”MAKE AN APPOINTMENT NOW ” button_alignment=”center” module_class=”postButton” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#35736F” button_border_radius=”21px” custom_margin=”20px||20px||true|false” button_text_size_tablet=”14px” button_text_size_phone=”8px” button_text_size_last_edited=”on|phone” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][et_pb_image src=”https://guidedwellnesscounselingut.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Laptop-at-St.-George-therapy-office-to-make-an-appointment-1-scaled.jpg” alt=”kelsey-chance-BB4GbHiU1KY-unsplash – Copy (1)” title_text=”Laptop at St. George therapy office to make an appointment” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_heading title=”Empowerment vs. People-Pleasing: What’s the Difference?” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”|700|||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]We often equate success with strength. But true empowerment is rooted in alignment — with your values, your boundaries, and your self-worth. Let’s read that one more time… TRUE empowerment is rooted in the alignment of your:

  • Values
  • Boundaries
  • Self-Worth

When you’re genuinely empowered, your confidence feels peaceful, not pressured. You make decisions with clarity, not guilt. You can give to others without abandoning yourself.

On the other hand, people-pleasing looks a lot like empowerment — until you get close.

It might sound like:

  • “I just want everyone to be happy.”
  • “It’s easier to do it myself.”
  • “I don’t want to let anyone down.”

But underneath, there’s often anxiety, resentment, or the quiet grief of self-neglect.

As an ambitious woman myself, I often fall prone to the “it’s easier if I do it myself” trap. The truth is, I focus well when I’m busy. A little bit of pressure helps me perform and I’ve got big goals!

But sure enough, days… weeks… or even months later, I feel resentment sneaking up in my relationships. This is followed by anger or distancing myself from the people I most want support! In other words – it hurts me and it hurt my relationships.

Can you relate?[/et_pb_text][et_pb_heading title=”Mini Self-Check: What Is People Pleasing And Am I Doing It? ” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”|700|||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”||10px||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”||10px||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]Do you lean more towards empowered or over extended? Answering just a few questions will help you get clarity. Answer yes or no to the following points:

  • Do you find it hard to say no without guilt?
  • Do you often feel resentful after doing things for others? (Maybe not right away, but in the days and weeks that follow?)
  • Do you apologize often — even when you haven’t done anything wrong?
  • Do you find yourself wondering, “What do I actually want?”
  • Does rest not feel restful?
  • Do you often feel shame or blame yourself when things don’t go as planned?

If you answered “yes” to two or more… you may be operating from people-pleasing, not empowerment.

Now keep in mind that the people you’re pleasing may not even be in your real day-to-day life. Social media is a powerful expectation-setting tool in our lives. We see spotless kitchens, homemade sourdough bread, supplements and vitamins for our kids, and card decks of creative date nights.

If you’re like me, you see this information more often than you see your closest girlfriends in real life! These images become the invisible standards we aim to achieve. But were they really your idea?[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://guidedwellnesscounselingut.com/contact/” button_text=”MAKE AN APPOINTMENT NOW ” button_alignment=”center” module_class=”postButton” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#35736F” button_border_radius=”21px” custom_margin=”20px||20px||true|false” button_text_size_tablet=”14px” button_text_size_phone=”8px” button_text_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][et_pb_image src=”https://guidedwellnesscounselingut.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Woman-in-her-St.-George-UT-home-enjoying-relaxation-1-scaled.jpg” alt=”kelsey-chance-BB4GbHiU1KY-unsplash – Copy (1)” title_text=”Woman in her St. George, UT home enjoying relaxation” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_heading title=”St. George, UT Women: What People-Pleasing Steals From You” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”|700|||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]Here’s the truth: people-pleasing feels helpful in the moment — but it costs you deeply over time.

You might notice:

  • Exhaustion that even sleep can’t solve
  • Disconnection from your own voice or your own wants and needs
  • Chronic anxiety about being liked, approved of, or doing the “right” thing
  • Low self-worth beneath all your accomplishments
  • Shame and guilt about your own self-care practices

This can be especially true for women in Southern Utah, where high expectations — in families, communities, and churches — can quietly shape the belief that being “selfless” means being silent about your own thoughts, feelings, wants and needs.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_heading title=”What Causes People-Pleasing And Faux Empowerment ” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”|700|||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]Maybe you’ve tried the podcasts. The journaling. The affirmations. The workouts.

And while those tools can be supportive, they often don’t stick — because the pattern of people-pleasing usually has deeper emotional roots.

Roots like early messages about who you had to be to feel loved.

Or trauma that taught you to put others first to stay safe.

You can’t always “logic” your way out of a pattern (e.g. people pleasing) that began emotionally. This is also true for patterns that began during a phase of life when you didn’t have the resources, tools, or support to cope or create safety in healthy ways.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://guidedwellnesscounselingut.com/contact/” button_text=”MAKE AN APPOINTMENT NOW” button_alignment=”center” module_class=”postButton” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#35736F” button_border_radius=”21px” custom_margin=”20px||20px||true|false” button_text_size_tablet=”14px” button_text_size_phone=”8px” button_text_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][et_pb_heading title=”Therapy In St. George, UT Helps You Heal the Root Issue” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”|700|||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]At Guided Wellness Counseling in St. George, we help women just like you stop over giving and start reclaiming their power — not through quick fixes, but through deep, whole-person healing.
