When people ask me what EMDR therapy for anxiety is like, I smile because I have two pieces of good news. (I mean, don’t you hate it when people say, “Well, I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news”?).
In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly what you can expect from EMDR therapy for anxiety—and why so many women in St. George are finding it life-changing. We’ll also talk about how EMDR differs from traditional talk therapy you may have tried in the past.
But before we begin, let me say this: even if anxiety isn’t your main struggle, there’s something here for you. The foundations of EMDR are similar whether you’re healing from trauma, grief, or burnout.
Think of it like roller skating—whether you’re using traditional skates or inlines, the structure is the same: one skate per foot, wheels to roll, and forward movement. The tools are steady; the motion is what helps you move forward.

Here’s where those two pieces of good news come in.
First, EMDR therapy is entirely customizable.
There is no cookie-cutter treatment here at Guided Wellness Counseling—only personalized attention and unique sessions. EMDR therapy will look and feel different for every woman because it’s designed to meet you exactly where you are.
Second, EMDR therapy is predictable.
As individualized as it is, 90% of EMDR therapy follows the same structure—think of it as a process with five steps. You’ll work through these same five steps several times during your course of therapy.
This repetition and predictability are worth their weight in gold, especially for an anxious nervous system that craves safety, structure, and connection. EMDR therapy provides plenty of that.

This is one of the most common questions I hear—and it’s such an important one.
EMDR therapy often begins with something you might already know: coping skills. Also called:
● Grounding
● Self-regulation
● Relaxation
Coping skills help you stay within what EMDR therapists call your Window of Tolerance.
Think of your Window of Tolerance as your sweet spot for experiencing stress. In this window,
there’s just enough challenge to help you grow, but not so much that you shut down or feel
overwhelmed.
Just like learning a new skill in an art class—some challenge is good! But too much, too fast, and it becomes hard to focus or grow (all you worry about is your project falling apart!). EMDR therapy helps you stay in that sweet spot, offering new material to grow with, but not too much or too fast.

Coping skills keep you grounded and calm so your nervous system can process and heal.
At our St. George, UT therapy office, we often see women with:
● A solid set of coping skills that already work well
● A lot of coping skills, but none that feel effective
● Very few coping skills and a need for support
● Dissociation or disconnection from the body, needing more creativity to stay present
There’s no right or wrong place to start here. Our EMDR therapists love helping you find what truly works for your nervous system—so you can stay calm, centered, and safe both in and out of session.
And honestly? These skills help in daily life, too. As an EMDR therapist, I’ve done my own personal EMDR therapy, and I use my EMDR coping skills—like a “calm place” visualization—during dentist appointments, medical procedures, and even hot flashes!

If you’ve ever felt like your emotions were “too much,” or that your pain was dismissed as stress, hormones, or sensitivity, you’re not alone. Many women come to EMDR therapy after years of being told to calm down, push through, or be grateful instead of angry or sad.
Here’s the truth: Your emotions aren’t the problem. They’re the map.
EMDR therapy is uniquely suited for women because it doesn’t ask you to minimize your story — it believes it. From the very beginning, EMDR therapy starts with the radical act of trusting your lived experience.
You don’t have to convince your therapist that your pain was real. You don’t have to have the perfect words to explain it. Your body already holds the truth — and EMDR therapy helps you release the tension, self-blame, and anxiety that have been stored there.
For women who have spent a lifetime silencing their needs or feeling invisible, this kind of safety
and validation is revolutionary. EMDR therapy doesn’t shame your sensitivity; it honors it as the
doorway to your healing.

Women are complex — and EMDR therapy honors that complexity.
Anxiety often doesn’t come from one big event. It can grow from many smaller experiences over time — moments of being talked over, dismissed, or told you were too emotional. EMDR helps you connect those dots and heal the deeper message beneath them: “My feelings matter.”
This is also where EMDR therapy’s focus on the body and nervous system becomes so
powerful. Women often carry their stress physically — tight jaws, stomach knots, tension in the
chest, sleepless nights. EMDR therapy gently helps the body release what’s been held there for
too long.
And here’s the beautiful part: you don’t have to relive every painful detail to heal. EMDR therapy
works with your nervous system directly, helping your body and brain integrate what happened
so that it no longer feels like a threat.
The result?
You feel calmer, clearer, and more at peace — not because you’ve forced yourself to “get over
it,” but because your body and nervous system finally believes you’re safe.

If this feels like the kind of support and structure your anxiety has been craving, you’re already one step closer to healing.
In the next blog, we’ll go deeper into what EMDR therapy actually looks like—from the first session to your breakthrough moments. You’ll learn what happens in session, how EMDR helps your mind and body connect, and why this process is so powerful for anxiety relief.
